Asuka Langley cosplay — casual, at Himeji Castle

Asuka wears a yellow sundress in Neon Genesis Evangelion, and it is close to the only thing she wears in the series that is just clothes. This gallery of ten photographs builds around that ordinariness and shoots it at Himeji Castle — the seventeenth-century hilltop complex in Hyogo, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the most-photographed castle in Japan.

Costume

A soft yellow summer dress with choker detail, red shoes, and the long orange twin tails. Yellow against white plaster walls, grey stone and green gardens is a gentle colour scheme rather than a loud one, and the set is lit entirely by daylight.

Around the castle

Standing in front of the main keep, walking a long wooden interior corridor, two frames beside the moat, a pose against a traditional stone wall, a walk through a castle gate in the red shoes, a frame with the castle and the gardens behind, a full-body shot against the stone walls and white buildings, a second wooden-corridor frame, and a close portrait with the castle walls behind.

Why the casual sets matter

Plugsuit galleries show the character as an icon. Sets like this one show her as a person on a summer afternoon, which is where Evangelion actually spends most of its running time.
