Quiet cosplay — Metal Gear Solid V, out in the open

Quiet is the silent sniper of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain — she never says a word, she hums instead, and she spends most of the game out of sight behind a scope. The first Quiet set on this site kept her in a dark studio. This one takes the same costume outside, into daylight, and puts her where a sniper actually works: in a forest, in an open field, and in a yard of abandoned, rusting railway cars.

Costume and props

The black tied halter top and shorts, sheer black tights and black lace-up combat boots, an olive suspender harness with a webbing belt, and a pair of red stun-grenade canisters hanging from the straps. One short olive-green glove and one long black glove. The props are a full-length sniper rifle with a scope and box magazine, a handgun, and a canvas-covered canteen.

The location

Most of the set was shot at a dead-end rail yard overgrown with grass and ferns: rows of rusted passenger cars with peeling paint and broken windows, orange track machines parked on the rails, and one carriage gutted from the inside, its ceiling hanging in strips over smashed wooden benches. Two frames step away from the rails — a pine and birch forest, and a field of tall grass at the edge of the trees. Natural summer light throughout, with blue sky and clouds in the open frames.

The ten frames

A low-angle opener in the forest with the rifle held across the body. Then the rail yard: a wide stance between two rows of rusted cars with the rifle raised to the sky, a seat on the edge of a flatcar with boots on the step, water poured from the canteen under the machinery, a handgun raised beside the face on the tracks, and a field portrait with the rifle on the shoulder. The last four use the carriages themselves — a full-length frame in the wrecked interior, an aim with the handgun from an open door, a lean out of a doorway with the train stretching back along the trees, and a seated frame on a rusty step with the pistol held close.
