Hatsune Miku cosplay — a summer morning on Patara Beach

Hatsune Miku is the Crypton Future Media Vocaloid with aqua twin tails and the number 01 — the most recognisable virtual singer in the world. The two earlier Miku galleries on this site were shot indoors, under neon and by a fireplace. This one goes outside: a bright early morning on Patara Beach on the southern coast of Turkey, with the sea, the dunes and nothing else.

The costume

A turquoise wig with two high twin tails long enough to trail on the sand, and a long side-swept fringe over one eye. The white halter bikini is trimmed in aqua and has two different cups: one white with Miku's red stencil 01 and a small "Hatsune Miku" line beneath it, the other in blue-and-white stripes. White tie-side bottoms with aqua bows, a red 01 tattoo on the shoulder, aqua nails and bare feet complete the look. There are no props — the wind and the twin tails do the work.

The location

Patara Beach is one of the longest sandy beaches in Turkey, backed by tall dunes and kept wild because loggerhead sea turtles nest there. The set moves between three backdrops: the open sea with a straight horizon, the dunes in front of a hill covered in green maquis, and the shoreline where a mountain range rises across the bay. Low morning sun keeps the light warm and the sky clean, and the aqua wig sits right between the blue of the water and the pale sand.

The ten frames

The cover is a little dance at the water's edge: one foot raised to the knee and both twin tails held out like wings. Next come a kneeling frame in the dunes with a direct look into the camera and a low crouch by the sea with a hand on the head. Then a walk through ankle-deep surf with the mountains behind, a relaxed three-quarter pose on rippled sand with a rocky headland on the horizon, and a crouch in the dunes with both hands at the collarbones. A full-length stretch with closed eyes faces the morning sun, a seated frame shades the eyes with one hand, a wide shot follows the surf line under a huge sky, and the last frame is a wink over the shoulder that shows the red 01 tattoo up close.
