A pale room of arches — one hung with a black curtain, the other an empty recess — and a single red wire-mesh chair. Yor Forger stands beside it with one boot up on the seat, a stiletto held point-down along the raised leg and the second blade at her hip. She is not looking at the camera but up and away, as if something outside the frame has caught her attention.

The chair is the only saturated object in the room, and it repeats the red of the rose-print lining that falls across its seat from the slit of the dress. The bent leg makes a sharp triangle against the curve of the arch behind it, and the whole figure is in frame, from the gold roses in the hair down to the heel on the gray floor.

Of the ten photographs, this is the one that reads most like a still from the story: the assassin paused, listening.
