Cold blue light fills a staged classroom, and Ryuko Matoi is down in a deep crouch, forearms resting on her knees and hands hanging loose. Her body turns three-quarters to one side while her face comes back to the lens. The camera drops to her eye level, so the whole pose fits in the frame, with a chalkboard packed with formulas rising behind her like a wall.

Soft front light keeps the face and the cropped navy sailor uniform crisp, while the bookshelves, uneven towers of books and two framed portraits go softer. Against all that blue, the red accents line up: the streak in her hair, the tie at the collar and the fingerless glove on her near knee.
